Elderly Live Accident on SBS Bus 145 ( 1)

On 6-11-2009 (Saturday) at about 10.25pm. Mdm Fung (78 yrs old) aboard a SBS bus number 145 in front of Amara Hotel at Tanjong Pagar Road. After she got on to the bus, it started moving. She found a seat which behind the driver. Before she could seat down properly the bus was making a right turn at a very fast speed. As she also has not seat down properly, the force was too strong and there also no handle for her to hold on to. Thus she fell from her seat and injured her left ear and bleeding seriously.

She wanted to note that the driver was making a false claim that she had already well seated in her seat and said that she fell on her own. She heard the driver called to the bus company and said that Mdm Fung fell down on her own. The driver even asked Mdm Fung whether she had any personal insurance or not? If yes he can note down the detail of the insurance. Mdm Fung was so pain at that moment and so angry of his careless driving attitude which caused her so pain and bleeding seriously.

She was later sent to the hospital (SGH) by ambulance. She was Sutured on her left ear and went home on 7-11-09 6am. But, when she reached home, at about 10am, she felt very pain of her left leg and can’t even stand up and move on. So she was admitted to SGH by ambulance again. She was discharged from SGH on 9-11-09 afternoon.

On 12-11-09 afternoon the doctor told her that her ear was still swollen thus can not do anything of the sutured part. Her next appointment with the doctor is 19-11-09. Mdm Fung told me that on 6-11-09, the doctor cut a small part of her ear to release the black blood if not in future she may need to cut off her whole left ear should there be any inflection.

I have contacted the staffs (Miss Kwong and Miss Shi) of SBS. They are unable to answer any of my questions. One of the question that I asked was the driver from China? Why I asked this question was because recently there were many passengers complaint about the China driver.

The other question that I asked Miss Shi was: will SBS give any compensation to Mdm Fung if it was the false of the driver?

No answer from Miss Shi due to the following reasons:

* I am a volunteer, SBS will only follow up with Mdm Fung or her daughter.

*This incident was under investigation. So SBS can not comment anything.

I told Miss Shi that according to ageing study, 1/3 of the elderly will die within one year if they fall down. There was an elderly stayed next block to Mdm Fung, she fell down and passed away after two weeks she admitted to SGH.

I have raised some ideas to Miss Shi for the safety of the passengers and for SBS to maintain their quality services.

Note:

*Mdm Fung said that the staff of SBS did call her and visited her in the hospital. She said that the traffic police officer was so nice and showed very much concern of her when recording the statement with her.

*On 13-11-2009 (Friday) 5pm. Mdm Fung went to the CC to wait to meet her MP.
She got a number 15.

She waited till 8pm, A male helper of MP attended to her and listen to her carefully.
Mdm Fung was happy with his patient with her.

She was not able to meet the MP because there were more than 60 people waiting to meet the MP.

This is a special blessing from the kind hearted people of Lau family /Sin family /Ong family /Phang family/Tan family and friends.

My sincere thanks to all of the kind hearted people. Most of them  even never met me before. But they all took initiative to contribute food and red package to those elderly who stay in the one room rental flats.

No words can express my feeling to these kind hearted people but only through the sharing from the photos and videos of this event.

A lunch box with rice, fish , meat and vegetable bring those elderly who live in a one room rental flat nutrition and hope.

Through the distribution of food will also allow some elderly walk out from their house to interact with other neighbours. It will also help them to reduce their mental illness triggered by loneliness.

I am very pleased to see the arrival of the young student-volunteers who came to care for the elderly, it is because we are now giving them the opportunity to participate in community activities, their compassion touched now and when they grow  up they will  know how to care for and respect for all the elderly in the society.

我很高兴看到年轻而热情的学生义工们跟着父母们一起到来关怀老人家。因为，我们现在让他们有机会参与社区活动，触动他们的怜悯之心，将来长大之后，才懂得关怀和尊敬长者，做一个有情有义之人。

我说：“是好心人啊！”

几个老人家要我代为向陈氏一家及朋友传达他们的祝福：“祝福好心人身体健康，富贵长寿、生意兴隆。”

九月初九的祝福，牵系着善心人和素未谋面的老人家的心。但愿这一份温馨的祝福，为彼此添加前进的力量；为生活注入真、善、美。

Every year on this day, Tan’s family, always remember to give those who live in one-room HDB rental flats elderly  a red package and a goodies bag.

Elderly asked: “Who is Miss Tan?”

I said: “It’s kind-hearted people !”

Several elderly  asked me to convey their blessing to the Tan’s family & friends: “Blessing good-hearted people good health, wealth and longevity, business is booming.

On this special day blessing, it connected closely with the heart of the kind hearted donors and the elderly who never met each other before.  I hope that this is a warm blessing for each other to add the power forward; for a living into the truth, goodness and beauty.

It was very sad to see the Lonely Elderly Deceased without Pride and dignity.

I have been writing some related articles and feedback to some govt. agencies since Year 2004. Do we have a better way to stop this kind of  tragedy?

As for the staffs of SWCDC, I am impressed that they are willing to open their heart to listen to all of the complaints and finally showed their sincerity to achieve professional quality services.
My sincere thanks to the team of SWCDC.

I apologized if anyone here found me being too harsh into this matter. I started this Thread and I am now ending it with this post and will move forward with the benefits of those we can in help  to them.

There are other topics at the Reach Discussion Corner which may need all of the Reach Contributors to voice out their views so as to help the policies makers to perform better. I do believe that our voices are being heard at REACH.

I have seen great improvement of SWCDC now. Not only because of Mr.Ang’s case but there was other case which I refer to the SWCDC recently and the staffs are now  doing their best to help the client.

It is common that among elderly people they have a lack of self-confidence, but yet are concerned about their ageing appearance. The more willing the elderly are willing to learn new things, the stronger their mental constitution becomes. When an elderly person chooses to maintain the status quo in his life, he is actually regressing, and falling behind in modern society. This could lead to low self-esteem, a lack of courage and a loss of confidence, potentially resulting in psychological problems arising.

As such, it is very important that elderly people learn new things.

*As elderly people grow distant from their children, they begin to suspect that their children are not filial. Often, they cannot forget the role that they used to play in the past as parents.

*What the elderly need most is for people to communicate with them, to have support from society and personal companionship. This forms the basis of counselling skills for the elderly.

How do we boost the psychological health of the elderly?

1. Help the elderly draw on their past experiences to become a ‘consultant’, not just a ‘doer’ like in the past. The elderly often easily become targets for criticism; the best is to communicate face-to-face with their relatives once or twice.
2. Encourage the elderly to become social workers, and interview other elderly people in society, helping them to become active as well. Being active can help to improve the interpersonal interactions of the elderly.
3. Try encouraging the elderly to accept their own external appearance. Counsellors can use a narrative descriptive method, for example : ” I feel that your face has a distinctive appearance, just like xx superstar…..So cool! You must have been really great last time……”

   4.Change the elderly person’s lifestyle, ‘bluff’ them into actively engaging in a small activity, and gradually build up from there.

   5.The elderly sometimes lose track of time, thus they end up doing the same thing repeatedly.

   6. Sometimes, counsellors can act as simpletons in front of the elderly. By timely holding of the elderly person’s hand, the elderly person will feel that the counsellor is very warm and welcoming, and has a kind heart. One must ‘play games’ ‘with the elderly.

   7. Guide the elderly in not losing their direction in life (there are many similar experiences in life.)
