Project York Hill:25-3-08, 2-4-2008, 3-5-08

Someone has told me that there are 3 blocks of one-room rental flats at York Hill. Many poor and old folks have been living by themselves, alone. There’s no Senior Citizens corner at the void deck, that’s why the old folks have been shutting themselves at home.

I discussed with 2 Samaritans Miss Tan and David (Lotus Light Charity Society (Singapore)).I seeked their help to subsidize not only to Project Henderson, but the old people at York Hill as well. These 2 Samaritans agreed immediately. With their support, I carried out my mission boldly on 25 March 08, the first giving out of ration supplies and works on the home visiting records, named Project York Hill.

Everything went smoothly, it initiated the active old folks at Henderson to come out and help. It just like when I asked those old folks who stay at Toa Payoh to come to Henderson to help out, whenever I go to a new location for a new project, I would ask those old folks who have been aided before to go to the new locations as well. Let involve everybody, keep them alive.

The second giving out of ration supplies went smoothly too. But, there are news about the world shortage of rice and the price of rice increases. I worry, is it possible to continue to give out free rice to so many old folks then? To my surprise, David still came with free packets of rice on 3 May 08. He also brought some wrapped gifts and breads along to give out to the old folks. He promised he would continue to supply them free rice. Miss Tan sponsored the canned foods and biscuits to the old folks.

At the dim void deck, there are not enough chairs and lights, no electrical facilities for me to organize the activities. My sister and I, friends and volunteers, we did play some simple games with the old folks and let them win some prizes. We cheered out loud, to bring out the active in them. We shared the news and current affairs too…..An old man came to me anxiously, he brought along his room mate’s utility bill, pointing to the name and address on the bill: “Miss, I beg you to give something to this man, he is very poor, he needs your food supplies, he is now in hospital, sick. When he comes back a few days later, he can eat your food supplies, or else he got nothing to eat.” I replied, “OK! no problem.”

Another 92 years old lady who lives by herself said to me, “Miss, if you didn’t see me here next month, I might have clean forgotten, my legs are weak, you have to bring up the food supplies to me.” I replied, “Certainly!”

An old man asked me, “Miss, do you have pork legs canned food? I didn’t eat this for very long time because it is expensive.” I told him: “I couldn’t buy it too. If I can get it next time, I will certainly let you have it.”

Seeing the smiles on the faces of the old people, I appreciated what David and Miss Tan have done. I haven’t meet up with Miss Tan, and neither did she, still she trusts me a lot. She is a friend of a former volunteer. I remembered a few months ago, when she donated tons of food supplies to the needy at Henderson for the first time, she made a request to her friend, just to show her a picture taken of mine would do. I invited her to view the activities report and pictures on this website later.

Strangers with benevolence, warmed the hearts of the old folks, and spread the messages of love and care to this society. Deeply grateful! Thank you!
